Fall cleanups and how leaving leaves in your yard can kill your grass

Fall Cleanups in San Antonio, Texas:

Fall is near and no one wants to have a backyard full of leaves. There are several reasons why you shouldn’t keep leaves on your lawn.

There are many ideas on whether leaving leaves on your grass is a good or bad practice, but what is the truth? This post is intended to explain why doing fall cleanups is crucial to maintain your grass beautiful and healthy.

  • As a general idea, having leaves on the front yard could be seen as you having neglected your lawn.

  • It doesn’t make any sense to have leaves over your precious lawn that has cost you time, dedication, and money to maintain. It just doesn't feel right having your lawn hidden under a bunch of leaves.

  • It can be dangerous for you and your loved ones, since debris or leaves on the lawn will make it slippery, which is not a good idea if you like enjoying your yard and/or if you have kids playing around.

Why is it dangerous to keep leaves or debris on your lawn?

Without sun and air, your grass can catch diseases.  Having leaves or debris on your lawn can block the sun and the air, in which grass does need both to grow. This can cause your grass to stop growing and possibly even die.

Wet, decomposing leaves are a good place for bugs, such as gnats, to flourish. You won’t be able to enjoy your yard with those pesky bugs and besides, we all know that there are several diseases that can be transmitted by them.

A perfect spot for animals to be in is under a bunch of leaves. This is very dangerous, not only because they can bite someone, but also because they can gain access to your home and reproduce.

The best time to make a fall clean up:

It is recommended to do fall cleanups a few weeks after your trees start dropping the leaves. If you do the fall cleanup at the beginning of the season, you may end up doing it again.

At J. Ponce and Son Landscaping, we recommend waiting until your trees are about to become completely bare before you start raking. But if you have the time and the energy, it wouldn’t hurt your grass if you do a fast, weekly cleaning. You may end up having a healthier lawn that is beautiful all the time.
